Homemade Body Butter Recipe
Our skin is our largest organ, so what we're putting on our bodies is just as important as what we are putting in. Many skin care products contain harmful chemicals that are carcinogenic, hormone disrupting, and toxic. Even many baby products contain these harmful ingredients, which I find quite disturbing.
My philosophy for skin care is to keep it simple, and you should essentially be able to eat what you are putting on your body! There shouldn't be any unknown words or chemicals, only wholesome, real ingredients. For this reason when I was pregnant with my daughter I came up with a body butter recipe that worked. It's great as a belly butter, but I still still use it for my entire body. And it's also what I use for my daughter's lotion after her baths. I couldn't find many products that I felt good about putting on her skin, so this was our solution. It's pretty simple, and all the of the ingredients can be found at your local health food store.
When I run out of this, in between batches I also just use sweet almond oil which is also safe for babies.
Homemade Body Butter Recipe
Cook time: 5 mins
Total time: 5 mins
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup cocoa butter
- 1/2 cup mango butter
- 1/2 cup shea butter
- 1/2 cup coconut oil
- 1/2 cup sweet almond oil
- 5-10 drops of essential oils of choice (optional)
Instructions
- Add all ingredients into a bowl and heat on low/medium using the double boiler method.
- Once melted remove from heat and then add the essential oils if you are using.
- Place in the fridge for 10-15 minutes, stirring periodically.
- Then allow to set at room temperature.
- I usually add the body butter into the jars while it's still soft and then set until firm in the fridge.
- For a really fluffy consistency you can whip with a mixer on low ( I don't often bother with this step)
- You can store at room temperature, unless you live in a very warm climate, then it may not stay firm (that is not the case for us us in Canada!)
Notes
Up until my daughter was 6 months old I didn't use any essential oils. My favourite combination now is lavender and lemon.
